BRANDING LESSONS FROM THE DEMOCRATIC DEBATES

THE VALUE OF QUOTABLE QUOTES AND SEXY SOUNDBITES

After 2 days of heated Democratic debates, a few presidential stars have emerged. Senator Kamala Harris has sprinted up 6 points in the polls now ranking third behind Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and tied with Senator Elizabeth Warren.  And, within 24 hours following the debate, she raised a staggering $2 million.

Why the leap? It’s based upon these 2 quotes:

  • “That little girl was me.”
  • “America does not want to witness a food fight; they want to know how we’ll put food on the table.”

Julian Castro uttered this phrase to rabid applause: “And on January 20, 2021, we’ll say ‘adiós’ to Donald Trump.”

Both of these candidates pulled these “sexy soundbites” out of their arsenal to make a strong impression. They built an indelible impression.

President Trump is a master at labeling his competitors. “Crooked Hillary” and “Sleep Joe” stuck because neither one of these presidential hopefuls articulated well enough the value of their brand. As the age-old expression goes: If you don’t’ brand yourself, someone else will.

Here’s my question: what are your soundbites that you’ve prepared in advance for a pitch, prospect call, or client meeting? How are you articulating the brand called YOU?
